Assalamualaikum,

Dear muslim sisters,

It has been very upset for me to find out about the ingredients mostly used in the make up, cosmetics and lipsticks currently available in the market. Most of them were made from non halal ingredients and even some of the lipsticks are not safe for our health. I have had experienced of using lipsticks which in the end changed my lips natural color into dark due to the leads content. This including over the counter lipsticks which were carrying well known brands. What are more surprising is to find out some of the main ingredients used in the lipsticks which are as follows :

halal lipstick check buttonPig’s Fat – Reason being is Pig’s fat is the only fat which does not melt at average body temperature while all other fats start melting. From the research done by the scientist, the pig’s fat does not melt on human body and lipstick manufactures have no option but to use it in their lipstick in order to help the lipstick stays on the lips.

halal lipstick check buttonAlcohol – Most of the lipsticks formula contains alcohol which is prohibited in Islam. Infact for certain individual, they will suffer some allergic reaction due to the alcohol content in the lipstick

halal lipstick check buttonBaby Placenta – some cosmetic producers used placenta as part of the ingredients in their cosmetics and lipstick products. Placenta is not only haram in Islam but also harmful to our health.

halal lipstick check buttonAnd many more other non halal ingredients

From the research done on the internet, I have found out the following suggestions as an alternative for the lipsticks :

  1. Wear vegan lipsticks and make up
  2. Wear lip gloss only and let the lips at its own natural color
  3. Not wearing any lipstick at all

However, I don’t think the above alternatives are the best solutions for me since...

  1. Even some vegan lipsticks contain alcohol
  2. I love wearing lipstick. Wearing lip gloss is not solving my problem anyway.
  3. I love to look prettier in front of my beloved husband. Not wearing lipstick is not a good suggestion for me.

Islam encourage us (muslimah) to beautify ourselves in front of our beloved husband as been said by ‘Abd al-Malik : “When ‘Awf ibn Muhallim al-Shaybani, one of the most highly respected leaders of the Arab nobility, married his daughter Umm Iyas to al-Harith ibn ‘Amr al-Kindi, she was made ready to be taken to the groom, then her mother Umamah came in to her, to advise her, and said: …. make sure that you smell good and look good; he should not see anything ugly in you, and he should not smell anything but a pleasant smell from you”

From the above it is very clear that it is our duty to beautify ourselves for our husband. Anyhow, look prettier does helps to increase our level of self confidence, don't you agree with me?

National halal forum to draw up sector’s road map

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Mindanao’s halal industry is intensifying efforts to improve its chances to penetrate the multi-billion-dollar global market.

Before the end of the month, the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) office in Central Mindanao will hold in Manila a forum geared towards charting a definite road map for the still-undeveloped Philippine halal industry.

Zenaida P. HR Laidan, DoST regional director, said the two-day event will gather global halal experts and local halal champions in the government, academe and the business sector.
“The affair will serve as an ideal venue in deliberating a national level platform for the future course of the Philippine halal industry,” she said in an interview yesterday.

Dubbed the National Halal Forum 2009, the event is themed “Enhancing Halal Science and Technology for Economic Growth and Social Equity.” It will be held at the Shangri-la Hotel in Makati City on Nov. 23-24. Last year, the first national halal summit was held in this city.

Halal covers food or non-food items prepared in Islam-prescribed manner. Ms. Laidan said there are an estimated two billion Muslim consumers abroad, but non-Muslims can also be tapped since Islam does not bar them from consuming halal products. She estimated the global halal market to be worth at least $600 billion.
Ms. Laidan, a Muslim scientist, said the forum is open to Muslims and non-Muslims who want to enrich their knowledge of halal and be a part of this lucrative industry. Foreign and local halal certifiers have been invited to grace the event that also seeks to create market linkages, she added.

Haja Sittie Mariam Abdul Latif, director of halal integrity at Malaysia’s Halal Industry Development Corp., said in the first summit last year that for the Philippines to penetrate the global market, local industries must have the commitment to produce quality products. “This can be achieved by going into training and be accredited by a credible halal certifying body,” Ms. Latif had said.

Ms. Laidan said her agency hopes to help Central Mindanao become the hub of the country’s halal sector by helping build a laboratory in the region worth at least P50 million.

The National Halal Accreditation Board of the Philippines has been pressing the country’s several local halal certifiers to register with it in a bid to ensure that quality standards are kept. -- R. S. Sarmiento

Malaysian halal players missing the boat in global market?

Recently, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said Malaysia has lost its first mover advantage in the halal industry as others have beaten it to the international market.

Husni's observation could not have been more accurate but he could have ventured further and ask what happened between the time Malaysia first came up with a blueprint to enter the global halal market in a big way and now.
The answer is obviously not much, save perhaps from the numerous conferences we have organised concerning halal products.
But the 'pudding' in the halal market cake does not lie in the number of conferences organised or the governing authorities established. It lies in putting products that can actually generate revenue into the market.
The global halal market is estimated to be worth some RM10.9 trillion a year and is growing fast with almost two billion Muslims around the globe.

But about 70 per cent of the global halal market is dominated by non-Islamic nations such as Australia, Brazil and Thailand.
None of the three named have sizeable Muslim population. Out of the 170 million or so people in Brazil, for example, only one million are Muslims.
But being named as one of the dominant players in the international halal market could only mean one thing - that nations such as Brazil were much quicker in noticing the real opportunities available.
Thailand is even farther ahead. Like Malaysia, it also aspires to be a global halal hub and by the strength of its processed halal food and the comprehensive supply-chain it has built, Thailand stands a better chance.
It seems Malaysia's weakness lies in its supply-chain and Halal Industry Development Corp (HDC) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Jamil Bidin had said that Malaysia needed to make sure the local players grow bigger and are in a position to supply more products to the global market.
But then, given Malaysia was the first to explore the international halal market in a big way, something must have gone wrong along the way. Surely there are shortcomings or the local players would have been as big as Jamil wanted them to be by now.
Malaysia must overcome these shortcomings now or risk missing the boat to what may well be a very lucrative market.
